Debasis Chakroborty - Biography

Throughout the last decade Debasis Chakroborty has been regularly performing at major Hindustani Classical Music festivals throughout India and is in high demand as an International performer.  With recent tours to Italy and Malaysia Debasis is coming to Australia in September 2008.

One of India’s foremost Indian Classical Guitar players, Debasis was groomed in the atmosphere of music from childhood. He began learning guitar from his father Shri Madhusudan Chakroborty in early childhood and later became a disciple of the guitar maestro Pandit Brij Bhushan Kabra in the traditional Guru Sishya Parampara of the Senia - Maihar Gharana.

Debasis's style of playing combines both Gayaki and Tantrakari Angs. He is still following the oldest tradition of playing Sarode, Sitar and Veena with his modified slide Guitar, which has its own beautiful technical virtuosity and three octave advantages. His purity of style, uniqueness of imagination and total absorption with melody coupled with his brilliant technique in which Tantrakari and and Layakari are prominent and make his recital enchanting.

While Debasis's Vilamvit (slow) compositions are contemplative, serene and heart rendering, his Drut (fast) compositions are exciting and full of sophisticated rhythmic patterns.  He is equally adapt at light classical compositions and folk styles.

He is an “A” grade artiste of All India Radio and Television in both Hindustani classical and light music. He is an empanelled artiste of the Indian Council of Cultural Relations under the Ministry of external affairs, Govt. of India.  He received his first class M.Phil. Degree in music and now working as a Lecturer in the faculty of Music, Institute of Visual and Performing Art, Mangalayatan University, Aligarh.
